After reading your comments both for and against, I feel that can but give my tu'pence worth.

The point you all seem to gather arround is both a moral and to some spiritual one. First I think that we need to look beyond the actual point of the crime. Second we need to look at the system we as human have allowed to become today's detection and justice system. Some have pointed out that it depends on things other than that which a crime may be judged, money for example.

Thus we need to look at the way we both catch and sentence criminals. It is to say that the law and order of this mordern world is both human and imperfect. thus before we even start to catch criminals we have error and judgement with biast. Given that this is not always due to coruption but via experience of life.
Thus the next stage, again suffers from the same problems as the first as well as more pressure from higher points off office, (politics- the first seed of evil. as politics is the advancement of one self in the name of the people) Therfore a judge can be made to do things in ways we can never guess.

Then we have the end all result in serious crime, the death sentence. Created at a time when people belived in revenge and the value of life was no more than a mans ability. Where it was easier for people to be "gotten rid of" then kept in a prison.
Now it todays world we have a two edged sword, where as people should have the rights protected even if the violate someone elses rights...

Not that I fell that the Bible holds the most complete asnwer it does show the duality that this hold justice system is based on.
The first quote is "an eye for an eye", being that we should equal harm for any harm, or injustice, done against us.
The second is "turn the other cheek", surely meaning that we should have faith in the human spirit and allow for a second chance, with due oportunity.

Then again it could be that I have just veiw things from my own perspective and have a imperct veiw of the facts.......

Okay firstly I believe two wrongs don't make a right.

The other problem that lies like a mine waiting to explode in this discussion is...How can you be sure you have the perpatrator?

    For example.

    From todays Glasgow Herald.

One of Britain's longest serving prisoners last night enjoyed his first taste of freedom in 27 years for a murder he has insisted he did not commit.
A senoir crown counsel yesterday admitted that, because of failings within the legal system, Stephen Downing might never have been jailed in the first place.

....At a hearing in the High Court in London, the Crown conceded that confessions Downing made as a 17-year-old, with the mental age of someone 11 - one oral and the other hand written - should not have been admitted in evidence....

    The article goes on.
My point is. You kill him. You find out he didn't do it. You have just killed an innocent person in the name of justice.

    Hypocritical if you ask me.

Justice is fallible as humanity is fallible.

A few months ago a man was released after about 40 years for a murder he was found not to commit. He has a few years of freedom left. Not much better than nothing.
    Right?

first of all... i am pro capital punishment. but not in every single murder case. i do not want to see an innocent man killed any more that the rest of you do. i believe it should be applied only in extreme cases and in cases where there is NO doubt as to the person's guilt. i'll give you 2 examples. both from canada. there is a man in prison right now in canada who was convicted of the sexual assault and murder of 11 children. this man not only freely admits his guilt, but makes no apologies for it. he does not even attempt to FAKE remorse!! in fact he almost seems proud of what he is done and is in the process of writing a book about what he did and wants to consult on a movie... but only if it is told HIS way. which means he wants to be the "hero" of the story rather than the villan. this man is sentenced to the maximum allowable under canadian law, which is 25 years without parole. no matter how many murders he is convicted of he will never serve more than 25 years. there is no doubt in anyone's mind, his included, that when he is released he will reoffend. if it were within my power this man would be executed. my second example is a man who was convicted of a double murder in new brunswick, canada. this man i know personally. he used to be one of my husband's best friends. we had no idea at the time how twisted he is. after he was convicted of the murder in NB he was sentenced to the maximum. 25 years with no chance of parole. after his conviction the flood gates opened. since he can be confined to prison for a period no longer than 25 years he began confessing to a string of murders straight across canada. aside from the 2 he has already been convicted of he has confessed to 14 more in Nova Scotia, quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia. he also admitted to one in Washington but then realized since it was in the US he could stand trial there and he refused to give any details and in fact later denied he had actually commited murder in washington. when TV reporters were questioning him after a court appearance he looked directly into the camera and said with no emotion "my only regret is getting caught. because now i'm not out there where i can kill again." when asked why he did it he shrugged and said "it's just what i do. i enjoy it." he then reminded everyone with a smile that he will only be 60 when he is released. from that one can assume that he will kill until he is too old to do it anymore. my only hope is that this man will die in prison because canadian law will not allow him to be executed. these men are guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt. and they should pay the ultimate price.

    I have a questinon Sniffer.
Why do we condemn people for taking as a hobby something that our governments pay others to do?

Until we elvolve, I believe we can never truly judge.

if these sick and twisted individuals had not given into their sadistic disgusting urges to take human life for fun we wouldn't have to pay people to exact the punishment.

    You are forgettine the fundemenatilty.
    We are animals.
    We are still evolving.
By all means keep these people out of circulation.
But we have no more right to say whether they should live or die than to say that the sun should or should not come up tomorrow.
I mean how wouls you choose to decide this?
    A televison poll perhaps?
Fry the Criminal of the week!!!
